In Victoria , you are required to wear a specific type of PFD depending your vessel type/length and type of area you are operating in. Below we have provided a guide of PFD types, for more detailed information please go to Transport Safety Website, Maritime Safety, select Recreational Boating Safety Handbook – Chapter 4.
PFD Type 1 – Recognised as a Life Jacket
This has a high level of buoyancy and the person wearing it will be kept in a safe floating position. These PFD’s are made in high visibility colours with reflective patches, so they are easily located in an emergency.
PFD Type 2 – Not Recognised as a Life Jacket
This is a buoyancy vest only and provides less buoyancy than the PFD type 1, but will keep your head above water. These are made in high visibility colours to be located in an emergency.
PFD Type 3 – Not Recognised as a Life Jacket
This is a buoyancy garment only. Similar buoyancy to the PFD Type 2, it is made in a variety of colours and is produced for particular activities e.g. stand-up paddleboard, kayaking, jet ski.
Heightened Risk
All people on a vessel must wear the appropriate PFD at all times of heightened risk. Heightened Risk includes;
- crossing or attempting to cross an ocean bar or operating in designated hazardous areas
- operating an hour after sunset or an hour before sunrise
- vessel is disabled
- yachting without safety lines
- restricted visability
- operating in an area subject to current severe weather warnings
PFD’s for Babies, Toddlers & Children
All babies, toddlers and children less than 10 years of age MUST wear the appropriate type of PFD at all times.
MAKE SURE YOUR PFD’S ARE PROPERLY FITTED
IT IS NOT A LIFE JACKET UNLESS YOU ARE WEARING IT!!!!!
