Membership

SPRS volunteers are dedicated to saving lives on the water. To do this safely, members need to have highly developed skills so that they can respond to an incident in a calm, professional and efficient manner, particularly when life or vessel are at risk. During operations, members need situational awareness so they can react appropriately when factors change and the situation starts escalating. Training also concentrates on strengthening teamwork because members of a duty team are allocated different roles and they must rely on each other to get the job done.
Members of the SPRS are all volunteers
All come from a variety of backgrounds, both trade-based and professional.
There are currently 35+ members. Thirty-two of these are actively involved in rescue operations in varying capacities. Active members must be medically and physically fit.
Members are “called out” to attend emergency situations through a paging system using mobile phones.
Such situations may include searching for missing boats, swimmers / divers and providing assistance to boat owners when their vessels have broken down or run aground.
Training is provided for members in safe boating, boat handling, first aid, marine radio operation, navigation, search and rescue techniques etc.
Selected members can progress to be trained as Boat Skippers.
Honorary Membership of Blairgowrie Yacht Squadron
As part of our lease arrangement with BYS, SPRS can nominate members as honorary members of BYS.
In April each year, SPRS submit an updated list of approved members to BYS. Approved SPRS members are those who have a minimum of 12 months’ service and have completed the theory component of the crew accreditation course.
This is considered a reward for regular participation in SPRS activities.
There are no joining or
membership fees.
New members are required to undergo a medical examination at no cost. Full training is provided at no cost to members.
New member applications are presented to the Committee of Management for ratification after a probationary period of approximately 3 months, during which time a prospective member must have shown a commitment to participate regularly in SPRS activities.
The Southern Peninsula Rescue Squad welcomes new members and we trust that you will consider joining us in the near future.
